THE PASSAGE OF TIME by JONATHAN SLADE
The Passage of Time is a moving and evocative cycle of three songs for soprano, flute and piano. Written as a response to a personal journey through grief to acceptance and the rebirth of hope, the music finds expression in three different poems in French, Italian and German, each representing a different time of the day.
Jonathan Slade’s music is melodic and accessible for both performer and audience. The vocal part may be sung either by soprano or mezzo, and the piano part also can be effectively performed on harp.
The Passage of Time contains artwork commissioned from leading artist Aimee Birnbaum, Member of the Royal Institute of Watercolour Artists. Each song is illustrated with an original artwork, as well as a strikingly beautiful cover. This volume is an exquisite artistic collaboration between composer, artist and publisher.
Jonathan Slade says: “Writing The Passage of Time was an act of catharsis that stretched over about eighteen months as I navigated a difficult period in my life. The idea of writing a song cycle with common musical themes but different languages had occurred to me before, but suddenly my circumstances provided a story to tell, and an urgency with which to tell it.
The Passage of Time refers to both the journey from moonlight through dawn to dusk, as depicted in the poetry by Verlaine, D’Annunzio and Uhland, and the rather longer journey from love and heartbreak to eventual acceptance. Though the language and musical style changes with each of these steps, melodic and rhythmic themes are shared between the movements, recurring and evolving as the story unfolds.”
