Flute technique practice

The foundations of flute technique are grounded in long tradition. For flutists, every good technique book will cover the core elements of tone development, finger dexterity, variety and ease of articulation, and legato intervals. In my last post, I looked at the latest research on effective practice and the three top tips for success.

Why not take a look at your standard warm-ups and think about refreshing your daily routine by incorporating the three top tips for practising better?

If you’d like to try a new approach to effective practice based on real research, this week I’m sharing a free package of sample Micro Etudes. The download files also includes play-along piano accompaniments for each exercise recorded by John Alley.

Micro Etudes: Melodic technique exercises for daily practice (by Elisabeth Parry), was written specifically to create flute technique routines and warm-ups which  use methods for proven effective practice. Each etude sequence tackles a particular technical point in a melodic context. For extra musical enjoyment they can be played with piano accompaniment. The practice goal of each micro etude is clear and realistic to keep motivation high.

Micro Etudes by Elisabeth Parry was a winner in the Pedagogy section of the NFA Newly Published Music Awards 2023.

Here’s what one reviewer says about it:

This books covers all the basics of flute technique through a series of short exercises that can be linked together for a more challenging workout. The keys used are limited to four sharps or flats which means that it’s great for developing players who will benefit from the shorter format, adult returners who will appreciate less notes, and for anyone who could do with some fresh ideas. The accompaniments are of a high quality, as you would expect from John Alley, so you can even use it as a play-along. Now that really does make practice seem easier!
